Foot Orthotic Wear & Care Instructions

Proper application, wear schedule, and maintenance guidelines for your foot orthotics

While being fit with your foot orthotics, your orthotist will guide you on how to properly wear, care for, and break them in to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness. Some points to remember:

    Wearing Guidelines

    • • Always wear shoes that are specifically designed or suitable to accommodate your foot orthotics. You may need a shoe that is larger, wider, or deeper to fit the orthotic comfortably. Ensure the shoe does not press or rub against your toes when worn with the orthotic insert.
    • • Worn-out shoes—especially those with damaged heels or soles—can interfere with the effectiveness of your orthotics. Regularly check the condition of your footwear, and plan to replace walking shoes at least once a year.
    • • Always wear clean, well-fitting stockings or socks with your orthotics. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles, as they can lead to irritation or skin breakdown over time.

    Full-Length vs. Half-Length Orthotics

For full-length orthotics, many athletic or walking shoes come with removable inlays. These inlays should be taken out before inserting the orthotic to provide adequate space for your foot. If you are using half-length orthotics, place them on top of the existing inlay. This ensures that your forefoot remains cushioned.

    Application

    • • To insert your orthotics, slide the front portion into the shoe first, then press down firmly on the heel to ensure the insert sits flat. Check with your hand to feel for any wrinkles or bunching inside the shoe before putting your foot in.
    • • Once the orthotic is properly seated, slide your foot into the shoe and fasten the laces and/or straps securely.
    • • To remove your orthotics, lift them by gently sliding your fingers under the arch and lifting upward. Avoid pulling on the top cover, as this may cause it to tear.

    Wear Schedule

Break in your foot orthotics gradually by following the recommended wear schedule. Your feet need time to adjust to the new pressures and alignment created by the inserts. The goal is to allow your body to adapt without causing discomfort or injury. Avoid sports or running activities while breaking in your new orthotics. Always remove your shoes and socks and carefully inspect your entire foot. Look for any signs of redness, sores, irritation, or other abnormalities.

    Day 1 — 1 to 2 Hours

Start by wearing the orthotics for 1 to 2 hours. After one hour, remove it and check your skin. You may notice light red marks, which should fade or disappear within 15 minutes. If the redness persists beyond 15 minutes, or if you see any blistering or bruising, do not put the orthotics back on. Contact your orthotist to schedule an appointment for adjustment.

    Day 2 — 2 to 3 Hours

Wear the orthosis for an additional hour compared to the previous day. Once again, check your skin for any signs of irritation or redness.

    Add 1 Hour Each Day

Gradually increase the wear time by about one hour each day. Typically, it takes 10-14 days to break in the orthotics until full-time wear is achieved.

    Maintenance

    • • Inspect your foot orthotics daily for any signs of cracking, separation, or reduced effectiveness.
    • • Do not attempt to modify the orthosis on your own. If you notice any issues, contact your orthotist to schedule an appointment for a professional evaluation and adjustment.
    • • To clean your inserts, you may wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not submerge the foot orthotics in water, as it could damage the foam layers. Then allow the orthotics to air dry and ensure the device is fully dry before wearing it to avoid any skin irritation or discomfort.
    • • Changes in weight, activity, surgeries, overall health, or growth can affect the fit of your foot orthotics. Visit with your orthotist on a regular basis to see if adjustments are needed.
