How can I prevent plagiocephaly?

Supervising tummy time and repositioning techniques can prevent and improve abnormal head shapes effectively until four months of age. Please note: most insurance companies will require parents to practice repositioning techniques for at least 2 months before proceeding with a cranial remolding orthosis.

How long will the cranial remolding orthosis need to be worn?

The duration varies based on the baby's needs, but the average length of treatment is 3 months.

Question 3

What age is recommended for the cranial remolding orthosis?

Accepted Answer

The ideal age for treatment is between 4 and 7 months when the skull is growing at a rapid rate. However, we see cranial remolding orthosis be effective and successfully corrected between 3 and 18 months. The older the child is the longer it will take for the cranial remolding orthosis to correct.

What is Torticollis?

Torticollis is when the neck muscles become stiff or tight causing the head to tilt or twist to one side. It can be self-corrected when treated early at 1 or 2 months of age. At 3 months plus, it can take longer for correction to occur.

Will my insurance cover the cranial remolding orthosis?

Accepted Answer

You can call your insurance customer service number located on the back of your insurance card to inquire about benefits and coverage. The standard billing code is S1040 - Cranial Remolding Orthosis (CRO). The most used diagnosis code is Q67.3 for deformational plagiocephaly. Rebound will do our own insurance verification at your child's evaluation appointment. Any patient responsibility for the cranial remolding orthosis will be due at the fitting/delivery appointment.

Question 6

My baby has a red mark. What should I do?

Take the cranial helmet off. If the red mark does not go away after one hour, keep the cranial off and call your orthotist. The cranial helmet may need to be adjusted.

Question 7

My baby won't sleep with the cranial remolding orthosis on. What do I do?

Accepted Answer

Keep the cranial helmet on. Your baby will get used to it. Taking the cranial helmet off will disrupt the head shape that we are correcting.

How often will my baby have appointments?

Accepted Answer

We suggest scheduling an appointment every two weeks for adjustments and head measurements. Depending on the growth of your child's head there will be times when you may need to come in sooner.

Question 9

Should my baby wear his/her cranial remolding orthosis at the beach or in a pool?

Accepted Answer

No. You should take the cranial helmet off while at the beach or in a pool. Immediately afterward, you will want to clean the cranial helmet eliminating any sand or sweat before you put the cranial helmet back on your child's head.
